Yellowstone National Park was established in 1872 by Congress preserving federal land in the western United States. The park is located in parts of Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho for the “…benefit and enjoyment of the people.” This congressional act began a worldwide effort in creating national parks. President Wilson realized the importance of protecting these federal lands and in 1916, signed an act that created the U.S. National Park Service. In this way, the 35 national parks and monuments already established, as well as future parks, could then be protected by this bureau.

There are basically seven “Leave No Trace” principles when visiting a national park. The idea behind these seven rules is that humans can affect the plants, animals, and even the “entire ecosystem” by their actions. To prepare ahead of time, it is a good idea to look up these seven principles before making your visit to a national park.

At the time of this writing, Yellowstone National Park is closed. However, you can still begin to plan for an awesome vacation in Yellowstone when restrictions are lifted. Yellowstone is probably one of the most popular national parks in the United States and visited by millions each year. The cost is $25.00 per vehicle which allows you to visit the park for seven days and also admits you into Grand Teton National Park. A one-year pass is also available for $50.00. Before traveling to Yellowstone, be sure you have planned ahead and have hotel reservations. If flying in, it is best to land in Jackson Hole, rent a car and drive to Yellowstone from there.

Popular activities in Yellowstone include camping, viewing Old Faithful geyser, watching for and taking photographs of the many animals that inhabit the 2,219,791 acres of the park. Gray wolves were restored to the park in 1995, and roam freely as do grizzly bears, elk, bison, and other wildlife. Also, there are numerous other hydrothermal features to explore by making use of the many available boardwalks. The entire family can go hiking, biking, or even riding horses throughout the many acres of the park.

There are many other national parks, and for a fee of $80.00, you can buy a pass that allows your entire family to visit any one of the many parks across the United States. National parks are beautiful, spacious, well-maintained, and fun for the entire family. So, next time you plan your family’s vacation, why not consider a national park as a destination?
